Day 6: Porto Pollo to Ajaccio: 60km, 760m, 04:00hr

Up early for a swim before breakfast, we felt quite virtuous.

There were going to be a few sharp ups and downs along the coast today, a bit like Cornwall/Devon, but nothing long. The road was rough, up then undulating to the top at Aqua Doria where we had the usual Oraginas at a quiet bar just off the road.

Then down to the coast and some lovely undeveloped beaches.

We found the peleton just leaving a restaurant at a beach at Verghia. Rob said that 4 years ago they had spent a liquid lunch there, but the others wanted to move on. We stayed, had a beer and coffee, then decided to book for lunch. We went for a swim in clear blue water on white sand, almost Caribbean. We dried off sharing a pichet of rose, then had a long seafood lunch, due in the main to the slow service that irritated me intensely. Still it couldn't spoil the setting as we savoured a delightful end to the holiday.

The remainder of the route was along the coast, a fair bit of traffic, then along dual carriage way into Ajaccio - most of which had a hard shoulder we could use so wasn't to bad and quite fast. Our chain fell off when restarting at some lights which was not helpful. We trundled into Ajaccio and spotted Kevin & Gaby who directed us to our hotel on the port frontage.

Lots of time to spare, so we 'did' Ajaccio, walked up a pedestrian shopping road to the old town and citadel. By chance saw Napoleon's birthplace.

Had a kir/beer/pastis in the hotel bar & street cafe whilst the other congregated and started to chat about the week etc.

Dinner was a set meal with jollity and t-shirts handed out. Then the bad news - we had to be leaving at 7am for the ferry so needed to be packed and get down to breakfast by 6:15.
